Matthew’s “from that time on” suggests Peter’s rebuke is not instant foolishness but a faithful leader’s fearful attempt to protect Jesus. Yet authority can turn care into control. Jesus does not discard Peter; he calls him back behind him, reminding us that Christ—not perfect leaders—builds the church and leads it.
This week’s Gospel marks the transition from watching Jesus’ ministry to joining it. Matthew reminds us that before there is a commission, there is compassion. Jesus sees the crowds and sends his disciples to respond. The challenge for the church is learning to see suffering around us with the eyes of Christ.
Jesus emphasizes that true discipleship requires a radical commitment, prioritizing allegiance to him above all else. He warns that following him entails counting the cost, including the potential loss of family ties and possessions. Discipleship is not about power or worldly success but about transformative love and self-sacrifice.
